Thor's Hammer & Time Freeze: How wordoverflows Power-Ups Work
Spelling words and bursting tiles is the heart of wordoverflows — but when the board starts stacking up fast, two power-ups can pull you back from the brink. Here's how they work and when to fire them.
Charging the power gauge
You don't buy power-ups or wait on a timer — you earn them by playing well. Every word you clear adds its points to the power gauge sitting next to your score. Bigger words and combos fill it faster.
When the gauge is full, two power-ups light up and you get to spend it on one of them. Using a power-up empties the gauge, so you immediately start charging toward the next one. In other words: the better you play, the more often you get a lifeline.
Thor's Hammer: smash a cluster open
Tap the hammer, then tap any settled tile on the board. The hammer smashes that tile plus the connected line of tiles touching it — running outward along its row and column until it hits a gap.
A few things worth knowing:
- It only affects settled tiles, not ones still falling.
- It clears the connected run in both directions, so it's at its best aimed into a dense, clogged cluster rather than a lonely tile.
- The tiles it's about to clear light up first, so you can see exactly what you're hitting before it lands.
Use it to blow open a corner that's creeping toward the top, or to clear out awkward letters you can't make a word from.
Time Freeze: stop the clock
Pick Time Freeze and the falling tiles stop dead for 30 seconds. Nothing new drops, nothing stacks higher — you just get half a minute of calm to hunt for words on the board exactly as it stands.
This is the one to save for the peak of the game, when tiles are raining fast and you're one bad column from game over. Freeze the board, calmly clear three or four words, and you'll come out the other side with breathing room — and a fuller gauge for next time.
Hammer or Freeze?
Since you can only spend a full gauge on one, a quick rule of thumb:
- One column is about to top out? Thor's Hammer — smash it down instantly.
- The whole board is rising too fast to think? Time Freeze — buy time to clear several words.
